Applying minor updates to vCenter and Platform Service Controller appliances is little bit different than upgrading to Major versions. You are able to apply the updates using the online repository or using your own repository or using the patch ISO.
Today we will look at how to apply minor updates to vCenter and PSA using on-premise repo or patch CD.
Update vCenter/PSC using on-premise repository
First you need to download the repository bundle from my.vmware.com. Upgrade repository is located in the same place where you find the vCenter installation media, under the name “VMware vCenter Server Appliance Update Bundle”
Then extract the update bundle into a web server you prefer. vCenter currently supports updating using HTTPS or FTPS protocols.
After that log into the vCenter Server/PSC appliance management window and then select update and then click on settings.
Then select use custom repository. Here you can specify the URL to your repository location and authentication details if required by the file server. Then click on save to apply changes.
After that appliance management will scan the provided repository for any available updates. Then select “Stage and Install” to continue with the update.
A popup will open, click on the EULA acceptance and then click next to continue.
If you wish to join VMware’s CEIP select the checkbox and click next.
Confirm whether you have backed up the PSC/vCenter. You can follow this article to configure VCSA backups. Then, click finish to start the update.
The update process will take some time and once it’s over your appliance will restart.
Log back to the vCenter/PSC appliance management console and verify whether the updates has applied.
Update vCenter/PSC using patch ISO
Log into the my.vmware.com and then navigate to the product patches page.
Then, from the drop down select the “VC” option to choose vCenter and then select the version. Click on Search to list all available patches.
Then, download the desired patch ISO to your local machine.
After that you need to mount the downloaded ISO to the vCenter appliance.
Then, log into the appliance management interface and navigate to update and then select “Check CD ROM” from the Check Updates drop down.
After that, The appliance will scan the mounted ISO and the updates will list under Available updates section.
Now you can install the updates as mentioned in previous steps.
